Meh on Bound to Be Fools
So, what's my problem with it? I gave it 3 stars, do I hate it? Or am I just spiteful right now because my homemade pudding came out like shi[REDACTED]? Well, the pudding was indeed an admittedly big blow to my emotional stability, but the manga didn't help.
There is lots to love. The art is good. Especially the artstyle. Great bodies, hot s**. All around, even the black and white fits. What's that? Why does one of the leads have elf ears? Why do you ask? Mind your own business. Even the writing does its job without any fuss, and the sea scene (the big dramatic one), was [REDACTED] amazing.
My gripe, really, is with the plot and the characterization. Is it because it's somewhat of a tragedy? Is it because all characters are very morally compromised? Is it my ruined pudding? A bit, but not really. I'm not that shallow. I mean I am but I have standards when it comes to reviewing.
If most characters consistently are pieces of sh[REDACTED], I understand. If most of them consistently make The Worst Choices at Any Given Moment, I'll deal with it. But the way they internalize and go on with their choices and behavior is shallow, most of the time. Their reactions are one dimensional. They stumble on tragedy. They don't understand it and they feel like dolls. Sure, trauma plays a big part in it, but I can separate traumatic responses from mere bad writing.
Jun's reaction at their first breakup, right at the start, is a trauma response. I see that. I understand it. I know why he behaved that way, in the moment. Shame is a powerful driving force. The way Blondie reconciles with him after all... that, is a lazy way to conclude a character art. MC has the worst treatment of them all, but no one is safe. In various degrees, the writing fails most among the cast. I don't see them as people, and at a certain point I just started to feel pointlessly disgusted.
I'm recommending it because the s** is hot, and honestly the drama does entertain a bit. But that's all.
